High-technology non-nuclear weapons, possibly including anti-missile defenses based on new principles, will dominate the battle space in the 21st century. But nuclear weapons will be deemed "useful" by those who oppose the status quo and peace and who cannot afford to race the United States and other "third wave" economies based on information and electronics. Nuclear deterrence and information will have an uneasy and dangerous coexistence. Nuclear weapons may be used by regional rogues to deter power projection and intervention by the United States and its allies. Information will be used to help confuse or defeat United States adversaries armed with weapons of mass destruction.

Download and read online Technology and the American Way of War in PDF and EPUB From the atom bomb to the spy satellites of the Cold War, the strategic limitations of the Vietnam War, and the technological triumphs of the Gulf war, Thomas G. Mahnken follows the development and integration of new technologies into the military and emphasizes their influence on the organization, mission, and culture of the armed services. In some cases, advancements in technology have forced different branches of the military to develop competing or superior weaponry, but more often than not the armed services have molded technology to suit their own purposes, remaining resilient in the face of technological challenges. Mahnken concludes with the reemergence of the traditional American way of war, which uses massive force to engage the enemy, and discusses how the armed forces could take advantage of the information revolution.

Download and read online Nuclear Strategy in PDF and EPUB Lawrence Freedman wrote in his acclaimed book The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy, 'James King permitted me to read a copy of his own masterly unpublished study entitled The New Strategy', (London. Macmillan in association with the International Institute for Strategic Studies. 1981) p.xii. There were in fact nine drafts of the manuscript written by James E. King Jr (Jim) from 1948 to 1988. Correspondence indicates that Lawrence Freedman probably read a copy in 1976 of a version given by Jim King to Ken Booth in 1973. Eight of these drafts are provided in their original unaltered form on a CD to accompany this volume. The ninth draft is not enclosed as it remains classified as 'Top Secret'. A declassified paper entitled 'The Intellectuals and the Bombs presented in 1982' provides insight for a likely reasoning of such a classification despite a publication contract with The Free Press.
