Dabei werden Bewer tungskriterien verwendet, die sich etwa folgendermaßen beschreiben lassen: Das Fahrzeug muß leicht kontrollierbar sein (darf den Fahrer nicht überfordern), darf den Fahrer auch bei Störungen nicht überraschen, muß die Fahrgrenzen deutlich erkennen lassen. Änderungen des Fahrverhaltens z. B. durch Beladung, Bereifung oder auf verschiedenen Fahrbahnen sollen möglichst klein sein. Diese Kriterien lassen sich - wie in Band B "Schwingungen" - in die beiden Hauptgruppen Komfort und Sicherheit unterteilen. Bei der aktiven Sicherheit mit dem Ziel der Verringerung der Unfallzahlen wird gefordert, das Kraftfahrzeug dem Fahrer anzupassen oder - anders ausgedrückt - Fahrer und Fahrzeug als Regelkreis gemeinsam zu betrachten. Im Versuch geschieht das schon immer (denn Fahrer beurteilen schließlich das Fahrzeug), in der Theorie hingegen selten. In Bild 1.1a ist der Regelkreis vereinfacht dar gestellt: Das Fahrzeug soll auf einem Sollkurs Ysoll entlangfahren, in Wirklichkeit fährt es auf einem Istkurs Ylst. Auf die Seitenabweichung ßy = Ysoll - Ylst re agiert der Fahrer mit einem Lenkradeinschlag b , so daß sich ein neuer Istkurs L Yist und eine neue - hoffentlich kleinere - Seitenabweichung ßy einstellt. Gleichzeitig wirkt auf das Kraftfahrzeug noch eine Störung, z. B. Seitenwind, ein.
