Download and read online Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers in PDF and EPUB Three major developments in English lexicography took place during the seventeenth century: the emergence of the first free standing monolingual English dictionaries; the making of new kinds of English lexicons that investigated dialect or etymology or that keyed English to invented 'philosophical' languages; and the massive expansion of bilingual lexicography, which not only placed English alongside the European vernaculars but also handled the languages of the new world. The essays in this volume discuss not only the internal history of lexicography but also its wider relationships with culture and society.

Download and read online X Ray Microscopy III in PDF and EPUB The growth of interest and research activity in X -ray microscopy is reflected in the increasing size and scope of a related series of international conferences, the latest of which (XRM90) was held at King's College London (3-7 September 1990) with over 130 delegates. Previous conferences in Gottingen and Brookhaven resulted in books in the Springer Series in Optical Sciences, and this volume, the proceedings of XRM90, maintains this tradition. Because of the large number of papers their lengths were strictly limited and, while most papers can be directly identified with conference presentations, in a few cases those on similar topics by the same authors have been combined into a longer paper to allow better use of the space. The book is divided into six parts, with Parts IT-VI covering the major areas of interest at the conference. In Part 1 are two overviews; Ron Burge presented the opening paper of the conference, while the closing, summary, contrlbution by Janos Kirz is included here as a comprehensive introduction to the remainder of the book. Part IT covers developments in X -ray sources and optics. The high average brightnesses of synchrotron radiation sources have made many applications pos sible, while the more convenient, laboratory-based, plasma sources offer much promise for the future. Several contributions report significant advances in X-ray optics, which must clearly continue fully to exploit the latest sources.

Download and read online The Bile Acids Chemistry Physiology and Metabolism in PDF and EPUB Over a decade has elapsed since the last volume in this series was published. At that time we considered that we had comprehensively covered all aspects relating to bile acid chemistry and physiology. However, major strides have been made in our understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of bile acids, due largely to the great advances which have taken place in analytical technology. As a result, the need to document these advances was felt acutely, and therefore this volume is devoted to methodologies in bile acid analysis and their applications. This volume includes twelve chapters written by prominent scientists in the field of bile acid research. The initial chapter discusses techniques of extraction and isolation of bile acids from biological fluids. It is followed by descriptions of physical methods of analysis and discussions of the way these techniques have been applied in the field of bile acid research. Of practical value is the inclusion of a comprehensive list of spectra obtained for refer ences by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry . These chapters are followed by reviews of biological methods of immuno assay and bioluminescence. Specific applications of these techniques are then addressed in contributions relating to bile acid analysis of tissue, serum, urine, and feces. With this integrated approach we have attempted to provide a volume which represents a comprehensive review of the analytical field of bile acids, while also serving as a useful reference book for those workers involved in bile acid analysis.

Download and read online The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Volume 4 The Age of Romanticism Second Edition in PDF and EPUB In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. The second edition of volume 4: The Age of Romanticism includes James Hogg, Matthew Gregory Lewis, and John Polidori as well as new selections by Mary Shelley, Sir Walter Scott, Maria Edgeworth, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, and Percy Shelley. The new edition also includes two new sections of contextual materials. New to the bound book is “The Natural, The Human, The Supernatural, and the Sublime”—a section that includes not only a good selection of material from writers such as Edmund Burke and artists such as J.M.W. Turner but also material that may be less well known on topics such as changing human attitudes towards non-animals. New to the website is a wide-ranging selection of contextual materials on the Industrial Revolution, entitled “Steam Power and the Machine Age”. Additional highlights of this volume include: Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, a lesser-known but wonderfully readable epistolary short novel; “A Hymn to Na’ra’yena” by Sir William Jones; and, in an exception to the anthology’s general policy of including works in their entirety, Mary Shelley is represented by the last two chapters of The Last Man and by a selection of letters.
