Beide wissen nichts von Theodore, dem leiblichen Sohn des angeblich kinderlosen Alphonso. Die oberen Etagen der Burg Otranto werden von einer riesigen scheppernden Rüstung heimgesucht, die dem Gesinde Todesangst einflößt, doch das sind nicht die einzigen übernatürlichen Ereignisse: Trompetenstöße ertönen, geheimnisvolle Ritter erscheinen auf der Zugbrücke, ein riesiger Helm fällt vom Himmel, das Porträt von Manfreds Großvater rutscht mit einem Stoßseufzer aus seinem Rahmen zu Boden, das Skelett eines Einsiedlers taucht auf und Statuen bluten aus der Nase.
