Download and read online Driving with the Top Down in PDF and EPUB Three women, two weeks, one convertible: sometimes life doesn't take you in the direction you expect... Colleen Bradley is married with a teenage son, a modest business repurposing and reselling antiques, and longtime fear that she was not her husband's first choice. When she decides to take a road trip down the east coast to check out antique auctions for her business, she also has a secret ulterior motive. Her one-woman mission for peace of mind is thrown slightly off course when sixteen year old Tamara becomes her co-pilot. The daughter of Colleen's brother-in-law, Tamara is aware that people see her as a screw-up, but she knows in her heart that she's so much more. She just wishes her father could see it, too. The already bumpy trip takes another unexpected turn when they stop at the diner that served as Colleen's college hangout and run into her old friend, Bitty Nolan Camalier. Clearly distressed, Bitty gives them a story full of holes: angry with her husband, she took off on her own, only to have her car stolen. Both Colleen and Tamara sense that there's more that Bitty isn't sharing, but Colleen offers to give Bitty a ride to Florida. So one becomes two becomes three as Colleen, Tamara, and Bitty make their way together down the coast. It's a road trip fraught with tension as Tamara's poor choices come back to haunt her and Bitty's secrets reach a boiling point. With no one to turn to but each other, these three women might just discover that you can get lost in life but somehow, true friends provide a roadmap to finding what you're really looking for.

Author: James Brady

Download and read online The Marine in PDF and EPUB A rousing new Marine Corps adventure from the author of the New York Times bestselling Warning of War and The Marines of Autumn The Marine is Colonel James ("Oliver") Cromwell, a warrior forged at Notre Dame and the Berlin of Hitler's Olympics, and honed by combat at Guadalcanal as one of Carlson's Marine Raiders. With the world at peace, the thirty-five-year old Cromwell is restlessly, if pleasantly, beached on garrison duty in California, aware of how much he misses the war, when he is ordered to fresh duty beyond the seas, as military attaché to the American ambassador in a dull Asian backwater half a world away. There, at dawn on a June Sunday, Ollie gets his wish for action. Korea violently erupts and Colonel Cromwell is caught up in the early, panicked, rout. While South Koreans cut and run, the first GIs hurried into battle are brushed aside by advancing Red tanks and tough peasant infantry. The Marine chronicles the war-hardened Cromwell's experience of the dramatic First Hundred Days of a brutal three-year Korean War, the chaos and cowardice of retreat, the last-ditch gallantry of the Pusan Perimeter, MacArthur's brilliant left hook sending Marines against the deadly seawall at Inchon, and the bloody assault to liberate Seoul and promote MacArthur's 1952 presidential ambitions. Ollie Cromwell's is the story of a "forgotten war" that never truly ended, but for a bitter truce along what a recent U.S. president called "the most dangerous border in the world." In The Marine, James Brady crafts a powerful novel of one man's service to his country and Corps.

Download and read online Driver Distraction and Inattention in PDF and EPUB It is estimated that, in the United States, around 20 percent of all Police-reported road crashes involve driver distraction as a contributing factor. This figure increases if other forms of inattention are considered. Evidence (reviewed in this volume) suggests that the situation is similar in other countries and that driver distraction and inattention are even more dangerous as contributing factors in crashes than drug and alcohol intoxication. Having a solid evidence-base from which to develop injury countermeasures is a cornerstone of road-safety management. This book adds to the accumulating evidence-base on driver distraction and inattention. With 24 chapters by 52 authors from more than 10 countries, it provides important new perspectives on the definition and meaning of driver distraction and inattention, the mechanisms that characterize them, the measurement of their effects, strategies for mitigating their effects, and recommendations for further research. The goal of this book is to inspire further research and countermeasure development to prevent and mitigate the potentially adverse effects of driver distraction and driver inattention, and, in doing so, to save lives.

Download and read online Manic Monday in PDF and EPUB Assassins have no fun...at least that is how Jake Monday feels. Sure, it pays well and has tons of great benefits like beautiful women, fast cars and expensive clothes. But, when you hate your job, how can you enjoy its perks? Jake finds that although he excels at killing, he finds no joy in it. His employer continues to push him to his limits, forcing Jake to re-evaluate his career choice. A chance meeting with a woman aboard a flight to Los Angeles leaves Jake questioning more than his occupation. She leaves him with a strange gift and a feeling that they are somehow connected. Before Jake can unravel the mysterious woman, he takes an assignment that changes his life forever. The stakes are legendary, the danger acute, and the world may never be the same. FROM THE AUTHOR Manic Monday is the first installment of a 7-part series of novellas. The Jake Monday Chronicles will also be included in two volumes of collected works: The Monday Collection, Volume One and Volume Two. So, whether you enjoy your series one installment at a time, or you like to read a longer work, we have you covered. The Monday Collection, Volume One contains Manic Monday, A Month of Mondays, and Thank God it's Monday. All these installments are also available to purchase separately if you wish. The Monday Collection, Volume Two will be released in the fourth quarter of 2014 and will include the final four parts of the Jake Monday saga: Rainy Days and Monday (March 2014), Can't Wait for Monday (May 2014), Mad Mad Monday (July 2014), and Monday Bloody Monday (September 2014). I get the question from time-to-time: what inspired you to write this story? With Jake Monday, my inspiration came from a multitude of sources. Authors like Ludlum, LeCarre, Fleming, and Follet come to mind. Also, I enjoy watching series on television: "Alias," "Heroes," "Lost," "Supernatural," "The X-Files," and "Hannibal." All of these have elements that influenced my writing. The Jake Monday Chronicles began in 2003 when I wrote a short story about an assassin named Jake Monday. I had no plans, really, but I had a sentence running through my head. The sentence that launched this series began: "Jake Monday hated Mondays more than any other day of the week." The idea that a high-profile assassin would be unhappy, unsatisfied, and struggling with his past and future, is not unique. I wanted to explore new areas of this theme. I thought of family, of a past hidden, of the moral challenge of an individual that finds himself caught in a massive global conspiracy while grappling with the choices he has made, willingly or not. So, Jake Monday is my Jason Bourne. Hallie is my Sidney Bristow (from Alias). My villains...well, they are all my own. I love to draw villains who are deep, believable, and scary. Not because they always represent the antithesis of the hero, but just the opposite: my villains are not much different than all of us. I do not believe in "grey areas," but I do believe the line between good and evil can be narrow. One wrong move and even someone like Jake Monday can be heading in the wrong direction.

Download and read online Companion to an Untold Story in PDF and EPUB When Marcia Aldrich's friend took his own life at the age of forty-six, they had known each other many years. As part of his preparations for death, he gave her many of his possessions, concealing his purposes in doing so, and when he committed his long-contemplated act, he was alone in a bare apartment. In Companion to an Untold Story, Aldrich struggles with her own failure to act on her suspicions about her friend's intentions. She pieces together the rough outline of his plan to die and the details of its execution. Yet she acknowledges that she cannot provide a complete narrative of why he killed himself. The story remains private to her friend, and out of that difficulty is born another story— the aftershocks of his suicide and the author's responses to what it set in motion. This book, modeled on the type of reference book called a "companion," attempts to find a form adequate to the way these two stories criss-cross, tangle, knot, and break. Organized alphabetically, the entries introduce, document, and reflect upon how suicide is so resistant to acceptance that it swallows up other aspects of a person's life. Aldrich finds an indirect approach to her friend's death, assembling letters, objects, and memories to archive an ungrievable loss and create a memorial to a life that does not easily make a claim on public attention. Intimate and austere, clear eyed and tender, this innovative work creates a new form in which to experience grief, remembrance, and reconciliation.
