Ian had taken a step forward, and Earl stepped between Walt and the rest of the group. Walt took another f step back. “Look, I’m worried too, but I’d just want to say, Carpe Diem. We are alive and well. We need to seize the day. It is all we have.” “She’s right,” spoke David. “The book of the creator says the same thing. It tells us to not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow has enough worry in itself. It also tells us, that we only have today, we may never see tomorrow. We should focus on what we can do today, yet take time to enjoy it too.” “In the Ukraine it is hard. The only thing that can help is to take each day as it comes.” She spoke further. There was a pause as everyone considered what she had said. Everyone knew what she was saying was true, but Walt. He never lived his life that way. He had always had a plan for himself. He always knew what he wanted to do and how to go about doing it. He did not ever stop to consider living for the day. To him that was absurd, the world went on and plans had to be made. “No,” he thought. “This was nonsense.” But he decided not to make an issue of it, for now.

Download and read online We Were There in PDF and EPUB On a winter night long ago, a baby boy was born in a stable with only the animals to witness his arrival. But it wasn’t just the cows and donkeys and soft little lambs who were present. Smaller, less loved creatures were there, too: the snake, the scorpion, the cockroach, and others. Lyrically written by Eve Bunting and luminously illustrated by Wendell Minor, this beautiful book offers a unique and moving perspective on the Christmas story. It reminds us that all God’s creatures, both great and small, celebrated the arrival of the Christ child.

Download and read online Fractured Fractals and Broken Dreams in PDF and EPUB This book proposes new notions of coherent geometric structure. Fractal patterns have emerged in many contexts, but what exactly is a pattern" and what is not? How can one make precise the structures lying within objects and the relationships between them? The foundations laid herein provide a fresh approach to a familiar field. From this emerges a wide range of open problems, large and small, and a variety of examples with diverse connections to other parts of mathematics. One of the main features of the present text is that the basic framework is completely new. This makes it easier for people to get into the field. There are many open problems, with plenty of opportunities that are likely to be close at hand, particularly as concerns the exploration of examples. On the other hand the general framework is quite broad and provides the possibility for future discoveries of some magnitude. Fractual geometries can arise in many different ways mathematically, but thereis not so much general language for making comparisons. This book provides some tools for doing this, and a place where researchers in different areas can find common ground and basic information."

Mathematical Intuition

Download and read online Mathematical Intuition in PDF and EPUB "Intuition" has perhaps been the least understood and the most abused term in philosophy. It is often the term used when one has no plausible explanation for the source of a given belief or opinion. According to some sceptics, it is understood only in terms of what it is not, and it is not any of the better understood means for acquiring knowledge. In mathematics the term has also unfortunately been used in this way. Thus, intuition is sometimes portrayed as if it were the Third Eye, something only mathematical "mystics", like Ramanujan, possess. In mathematics the notion has also been used in a host of other senses: by "intuitive" one might mean informal, or non-rigourous, or visual, or holistic, or incomplete, or perhaps even convincing in spite of lack of proof. My aim in this book is to sweep all of this aside, to argue that there is a perfectly coherent, philosophically respectable notion of mathematical intuition according to which intuition is a condition necessary for mathemati cal knowledge. I shall argue that mathematical intuition is not any special or mysterious kind of faculty, and that it is possible to make progress in the philosophical analysis of this notion. This kind of undertaking has a precedent in the philosophy of Kant. While I shall be mostly developing ideas about intuition due to Edmund Husser! there will be a kind of Kantian argument underlying the entire book.

Download and read online Lectures on Algebraic Geometry I in PDF and EPUB This book and the following second volume is an introduction into modern algebraic geometry. In the first volume the methods of homological algebra, theory of sheaves, and sheaf cohomology are developed. These methods are indispensable for modern algebraic geometry, but they are also fundamental for other branches of mathematics and of great interest in their own. In the last chapter of volume I these concepts are applied to the theory of compact Riemann surfaces. In this chapter the author makes clear how influential the ideas of Abel, Riemann and Jacobi were and that many of the modern methods have been anticipated by them. For this second edition the text was completely revised and corrected. The author also added a short section on moduli of elliptic curves with N-level structures. This new paragraph anticipates some of the techniques of volume II.
